A study on motivation considered to choose a job as male counselors and their experiences

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that have influenced males when beginning their journey as counselors and their experiences as male counselors using Concept mapping. Interviews with 8 male counselors were conducted to extract the information about their experiences. As a result, the main motivation of males to become counselors was shown in total 6 clusters. The clusters were as follow:¡®personality enjoying communication with others¡¯,¡®interest in psychology¡¯,¡®interest in the atmosphere of counseling job¡¯,¡®encountering counseling by chance and choice¡¯and¡®choice due to personal situation and the condition¡¯ and¡®positive experience from counseling¡¯. Second, the factors that males had experienced as counselors were divided into 5 clusters. The five clusters were followings:¡®personal growth through counseling¡¯,¡®getting more attention and expectation due to being a male counselor¡¯,¡®experiencing limits due to being compared with female counselors¡¯, ¡®financial burden as head of household¡¯and¡®feeing cautious in the relationship with female coworkers¡¯.
